Lourena Devenny Gitz, age 93, peacefully passed away with her family at her bedside early Saturday morning, June 17th, 2017 at Canon Hospice. A longtime resident of Harahan, LA, she was better known to friends and family as Rena or "Mimi". She was a vivacious woman, highly artistic and full of creativity. She served as appointed Secretary for the Delta Carnival Club which displayed her many talents. She loved to entertain, just ask anyone who was lucky enough to attend one of her famous BONCO parties! She worked diligently for years as the office manager and official bookkeeper for her family owned business, Gitz Electric. She even worked as an Election Commissioner while offering her home as an official polling place for neighborhood residents. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post 396 as well as the Jefferson United Methodist Church, where she also sang her heart out as part of the choir. She, herself, had a big heart when it came to helping those in need. For many years she was a caregiver to several members of her family and others; candy striper volunteer at Elmwood Medical Center as well as the local Senior Citizen Center, only mention a few. The only thing she loved more than life was her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, George A. Gitz; parents, Emily and James B. Devenny (New Orleans, LA) and one brother, James H. Devenny (Lafayette, LA). Lourena is survived by her 2 sons, Glenn, Jay & daughter in-law Linda; 5 grandchildren, Jayson & wife Alyse, Shana, Glenn, II, Denise & Rhonda; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 nieces, Linda & husband Bobby, Esther, nephew Victor and countless extended family & friends. A reception in celebration of her life will be held on Friday, June 23, 2017 from 4pm-6pm at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd, Metairie, LA 70006. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canon Hospice, 1221 South Clearview Parkway, 4th Floor, Jefferson, LA, 70121.
