John Alden Rodgers of Metairie, Louisiana, a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, died Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at the age of 84.
John was born on June 4, 1930 in Wittenberg, Texas to Harold Eugene and Mabel Thomas Rodgers. He grew up in Amarillo and attended Amarillo High School where he was on the football and boxing team, an Eagle Scout, and a member of the ROTC Rifle team. Following high school, John attended the University of Oklahoma, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Geological Engineering.
In 1952 he married Frances Boyce Miller of Amarillo. After serving as an officer in the U. S. Army for two years, they moved to New Orleans where he began his 35 year career as a Petroleum Engineer with Texaco. He was a charter member of Parkway Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon and Elder and a member of the American Petroleum Institute, where he held several leadership positions. John also belonged to the Society of Mayflower Descendants and the Alden Kindred of America.
John was passionate (understatement) about his Oklahoma Sooners, a voracious reader, enjoyed fishing with his son and friends, camping, cooking, woodworking and the many trips with his family to Destin. Also, he often spoke fondly of the summers he spent as a child on the Rodgers Ranch in Swisher County Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Thomas Eugene Rodgers, his brother in law Bob Hudson and his grandson, Michael Alden Grant.
John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Frances Miller Rodgers; children, Robert Michael Rodgers and wife Patricia, Rebecca Rodgers Grant, Victoria Rodgers Spruce and husband Joseph and Marjorie Rodgers Judd; grandchildren, Jason Rodgers, Melissa Rodgers, Victoria Grant and Victoria Ashley Judd; sister, Louise Hudson; brother and sister-in law, Jerry and Ida Dwight and sister-in-law, Barbara Rodgers and 9 nieces and nephews.
A memorial service officiated by Dr. Rebecca Dwight Bruff and Rev. Tom Paine, will be held at 11am on Tuesday, April 7 at Parkway Presbyterian Church, 6200 Camphor, Metairie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkway Presbyterian Church. The online guestbook is available at www.leitzeaganfuneralhome.com.
