Janice Ann Dugas "Jan" Hackett passed away peacefully on May 10, 2017 at the age of 79. She is survived by her beloved husband of 49 years, Michael George Hackett. Proud and loving mother of Susan Hackett Walpole (Clinton) and M. Geoffrey Hackett (Sofia). Devoted grandmother of Caitlin Lea Walpole, Spencer Michael Hackett and Lucy Grace Hackett. Jan was born April 10, 1938 in Donaldsonville, LA and was a longtime resident of Metairie. She graduated from Mt. Carmel Academy in New Iberia, earned her undergraduate degree at LSU and nursing and nurse practitioner degrees from Our Lady of the Lake in Baton Rouge and Tulane University. She was the second nurse practitioner licensed in the state and a longtime employee at Ochsner Medical Center, where she retired as Unit Director of Peds, PICU and NICU, caring for thousands of newborns during her career.
She also worked in the Nursing Education Dept. where she oriented nurses new to the hospital. She was the Unit Instructor for Pediatrics, responsible for teaching nurses to care for pediatric patients and also worked as the nursing supervisor for the Dept. of Nursing. Jan mentored many nurse leaders and physicians throughout her career at Ochsner. She also was responsible for neonatal transport (flight care) for a time and helped establish Flight Care at Ochsner Foundation Hospital.
She was a member and devoted volunteer of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church and also donated her time to the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana, CASA Jefferson, Camp Hardtner, What You Give Will Grow and many other organizations.
She was preceded in death by her father, Honore Francois Dugas; her mother, Marie Bernadette Hymel Dugas; brother, Michael Anthony Dugas; and stepdaughter Diedre Kay Hackett.
Relatives and friends are invited to the funeral service at St. Augustine Episcopal Church, 3412 Haring Road, Metairie on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be at the church from noon until service time.
